![]() ![]() The Staten Island Levee project, the Living Breakwaters project, and numerous other initiatives, large and small, including the City’s East Shore Special Coastal Risk District and Rezoning, are enhancing resilience in the borough. Beach sand and boardwalks were swept away. Tens of thousands lost power in the borough. ![]() According to the City’s statistics, nearly 30 percent of the homes destroyed by the massive storm were located in Staten Island. Twenty–four people in the borough were killed. Staten Island was particularly hard hit by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. A Rebuild by Design competition winner in 2014, the Living Breakwaters project is underway and being managed by New York State. ![]() The Staten Island Levee project is north of the Living Breakwaters project, a breakwater system that will attenuate wave energy and reduce erosion at Staten Island’s south shores, between Butler Manor Woods and Wards Point (the southernmost point of New York State, in the neighborhood of Tottenville). The huge resilience project should be completed in 2024. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to break ground next year on a series of levees, berms, wetlands, and seawalls stretching from Fort Wadsworth at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Great Kills 5.3 miles south. The project is funded by the New York Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery. Prudent's staff will process the data each month over the course of the year. The newly collected data will also be used to verify whether the existing historical records documenting the area’s current profiles are accurate. This data will provide vital information on how the speed and direction of currents impact the development of oyster larvae. The crew is also tasked with servicing and maintaining two Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers* (ADCPs), which measure the speed and direction of water currents throughout the water column, as well as wave height and direction. Prudent’s team is responsible for surveying and recording seafloor elevations throughout the course of the project. Prudent Engineering’s hydrographic surveying team has been retained by SCAPE / Landscape Architecture, PLLC, to provide bathymetric surveying services for the Living Breakwaters project. ![]() These artificial reefs will offer protection for both coastal communities and local marine wildlife. A novel component of the barrier structures is their hollow interiors, which are designed to capture sediment and house living organisms, such as oysters and clams, providing a protected habitat that will foster the development of marine colonies. To protect the coastline and communities on the south end of Staten Island, New York, vulnerable to storm activity, this project involves the design and implementation of marine breakwalls in Raritan Bay. ![]()
